Learning through Liberation, Empowering the People.
The FREE Zion Project is a research-informed educational center that focuses on Black rural education in Zion, a local community in Meade County, Kentucky. Dr. LeAnna Luney is the Project Director working on The FREE Zion Project. The purpose of this project is for members of the Zion community to create a curriculum for the Zion Freedom School – an empowering learning environment that encourages Black folks to become critically conscious and better understand their lives as Black Americans.

Interviews and Observation
Schedule an interview to share about your experiences in rural and predominantly white schools. Or, schedule a time for a member of our reasearch team to observe you at a community event.
FREEdom Summer
During FREEdom Summers, college student Research Associates collaborate with The FREE Zion Project to understand the context of Kentucky's learning systems. Our FREEdom Summer initiative honors the Civil Rights Movement’s 1964 Freedom Summer.
Curriculum Reveals
Curriculum Reveals ensure that the research team accurately details the Zion community’s experiences in predominantly white and rural school systems, as well as their desires for The Zion FREEdom School curriculum.
Black History Programming
We believe that Black history is American history. Our Black history programming meets community members’ demands to learn more about Black history, both locally and globally. We offer Black history programming to empower the people through truth.
